What Is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is Google's flagship AI assistant, released to the public in 2023 as the successor to Google Bard. It is powered by Google's Gemini family of AI models and is designed to be a capable AI assistant that integrates deeply with Google's ecosystem of products.

If you use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, YouTube, or Google Search, Gemini is built to work alongside all of these — which makes it uniquely practical for people already living in the Google ecosystem.

How to Access Gemini

Option 1: Gemini.google.com

The main way to use Gemini is through its dedicated website. Go to gemini.google.com in your browser. You will be asked to sign in with a Google account — the same account you use for Gmail or YouTube.

Once signed in, you are on the Gemini interface and can start chatting immediately.

Option 2: The Gemini App (Mobile)

Option 3: Through Google Search

Understanding the Interface

The Gemini interface at gemini.google.com is clean and simple:

Main chat area — your conversation with Gemini. Your messages on the right, Gemini's responses on the left.

Input box — at the bottom. Type your message and press Enter or click the send arrow. The microphone icon lets you speak instead of type.

Image upload — the image icon in the input box. Upload photos, screenshots, diagrams, or documents for Gemini to analyze.

Left sidebar — your conversation history. Recent conversations are listed here. Click any to return to it.

Try its writing ability: "Write a short, friendly out-of-office email for someone going on a 2-week vacation."

Test image analysis: Upload a photo of anything and ask: "What is in this image? Describe it in detail."

Try its Google Search integration: "What are the most-talked-about AI tools in the news right now?" (Gemini will search the web to answer this)
